If the high cost of just about everything has you thinking you just can’t afford a new computer, it might be time to upgrade the hardware you have on your current system.

Before you jump on the new computer bandwagon, it’s a good idea to assess the performance of the machine you do have. Does your computer have trouble switching off and on? Is your computer getting slower or are you getting strange glitches from your keypad? In many cases, your computer might need to remove some things from the hard drive to speed it up. It might need to be defragmented to free up some space and improve performance.

In many cases, those strange glitches from your computer are probably coming from the keys being gummed up with gunk from all the use. If you’ve cleaned up your hard drive (try to leave about 80 percent free), defragmented your system and given it a thorough cleaning, then and only then should you consider what other options you might have.

Determining if the cost of upgrading exceeds the cost of not upgrading is a great place to start. Another great place to start is by assessing the needs of your computer. Do you need more memory or improved speed? If memory is the problem, an external hard drive is not only recommended but should be mandatory to ensure safe storage of your work. If speed is your issue, you might start by adding more RAM to your current computer. Installing extra RAM isn’t hard and even the most non savvy computer user can execute this with perfection.

If your current computer is functioning at just less than perfect, you can add things to it that will increase its longevity. If you are doing new things with your computer like video streaming, video editing or high resolution photo editing, getting an entirely new system that meets your needs might be the best option.
